Moon Watch Series, Moon Gazing

Here at Outland, we’re nature nerds, and some of our favorite past times include stargazing and moon gazing. There is a meditation method, called the Trataka Technique, which involves lunar cycles. And before posture and breathing methods became fixtures in Hatha yoga, Trataka Techniques were a staple in the practice. Take a look at our moon watch series below!
As our closest celestial neighbor, the moon is smaller than the sun and gives off less light, but its natural power is undeniable. With regard to gravitational pull, this small satellite exerts two-and-a-half times more force than the sun. This power influences every living thing on our planet — from the oceanic tides to our moods.
Moonlight exposure has often been thought to relieve anxiety and stress and improve relaxation by prompting a natural release of melatonin. Some people also claim that moonbathing (or moon gazing) could even benefit the regulation of the female menstrual cycle, since the moon is thought to help increase fertility.
Below, you’ll find our moon phases for the month of December 2019.

Above, you can see the calendar of Moon phases for December 2019, the name of a current phase, an approximate percent of an illuminated surface of the Moon visible from Earth, and the Moon’s age (days) are also provided.

Photos of the Moon come from NASA’S Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio.

Next time you feel a bit out of control, don’t forget to look up. Try out a new yoga or meditation method that connects with the lunar cycles or even some evening activities that give you a chance to look up at the moon and feel it’s influence. Happy gazing!
